National POW/MIA Recognition Day

Friday was National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Many Americans across the United States paused to remember the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are missing in action (MIA), and their families. All military installations flew the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag, which symbolizes the nation’s remembrance of those who were imprisoned while serving in conflicts and those who remain missing.

I wrote this post on Thursday and thought I published it, but apparently I neglected to actually post it. DUH!

I have posted before about the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall. I visited when it was here, and it was almost as moving as seeing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC. It was in my sister’s town last week and they visited, too. They also escorted the wall with a very large group of motorcycles and made sure the kids and grand kids went with them to pay respects.

My sister visited LtCol Di Tommaso and said a prayer for me. He’s been a part of my life for over 15 years. The bracelet I had before that broke in half, but it is still in my jewelry box – waiting. My sister has worn hers most of her adult life, too.  My niece now has her own POW/MIA bracelet, and she recently posted information on her Facebook to introduce him to all of us. My daughter has worn hers with pride for several years now.

Remember tomorrow – but remember that it takes more than just one day a year. We have to honor our vets every day, remember the fallen every day, and educate the next generation. They need to know how important their freedom is. And go ahead and remind some of the adults around you, too. Maybe one day we won’t need to dedicate a day to those who are still unaccounted for.

  1. Let us always remember, and continue to pray for them and their families, because I know they can’t forget! These are their fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, etc… and they gave everything for our freedom! May God continue to hold them all in the palm of his hand!
