Saturday we did some awesome riding. The Three Twisted Sisters are well known in the motorcycle world, and if you love beautiful scenery and great riding, you should definitely put this on your list of places to ride. Aside from a couple of failed suicide attempts by deer and squirrels, the riding was quite relaxing and enjoyable (Thank you guardian angels!).
After B. woke us up, (yawn!!!) we left Marble Falls and headed towards Luckenbach - you know…Willie, Waylon and The Boys.
Yes, it really is a place. A really small place. Population: 3. We have been before but it is still a great place to stop and grab a beverage and stretch your legs. I did not know that Rich and April were married there by the creek under the 500-year-old Cypress Tree and it was cool to re-visit their wedding day with them. There is a walkway of custom bricks at Luckenbach that people purchase for all different reasons and this is theirs… forever carved in stone. Very Cool.
We had an amazing lunch at Alamo Springs Cafe, famous all over the country for their burgers and bats. The hand-made burgers are awesome, they make their own bread every day, and they have this fellow hanging out wherever he feels like it:
They also have a cave nearby that has thousands of bats and if we had been there around dusk we would have seen them all coming out looking for supper. It made me think of our days on Okinawa, watching the bats hunt from our back patio.
We headed on into Leaky and took a small break at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop. Another cool little place with beverages, food and a small retail shop that caters to bikers doing the Twisted Sisters. The place is decorated with wrecked motorcycle parts that come from riding up there – a true testament to the challenges of these roads. April and I agreed it was a little creepy, but the guys thought it was pretty cool.
We knew that Mamacita’s in Kerrville was our destination for dinner and I have to say, I love this place. It reminded me of a casino – not the gambling part, but that there were lots of smaller businesses inside the restaurant. They had a little gift shop, a Cheesecake Factory counter, a Starbucks counter, and another upscale restaurant in the back. We had a couple of pitchers of margaritas, some awesome Mexican food and finished everything off with a cheesecake judging. (Spoiler alert: Banana’s Foster cheesecake is better than Boston Creme Pie cheesecake by unanimous vote). I really think we could have lived there for a week or so – just saying!
We headed back to Hunter House in Ingram where we had reserved one of their suites. This is actually a small two-bedroom apartment with all the furnishings, and it worked out great for us. Not an elegant place, but clean, functional and affordable, and within spitting distance of the Ol’ Ingram Social Club. Just our kind of place – small and casual with a bartender that took really good care of us.
We rode all day and still never caught up with Ann and Justin and the Fuel crowd. We had planned to meet up with them, but since we were slightly ahead of schedule (
) and they were not, it just didn’t work out. We heard they had a great time, too and we are looking forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks to hear about their adventures.
Meanwhile, we chalked up another great trip with Rich and April. We stayed slightly ahead of schedule all weekend, and my darling hubby and I have decided that we might let Rich and April hang out with us for at least one more trip. Luv you guys – really! ![]()
